A lot of people ask me about my Dungeons and Dragons experiences. I think most of you just want to hear more proof that I'm a nerd, because nerd shit is hip and en vogue. I'm still pretty new to D&D, even though I think I'm a few years into it now. I started out with a pretty empty, husk of a Monk character in 5e, originally. I played that character 'til the campaign's end, over 2 years. It was fun to play the game, but I had some qualms about my character and what I'd (literally) brought to the table for everyone.
As a creator and entertainer, I failed to show up. A passive half-elf monk with no a solid backstory, in an unfolding world with an unfolding plot- not much personality or personal responsibility as a player character. I was unkind to the Dungeon Master by letting them to fill in the blanks of my character, and foolishly thinking I was contributing a plot device. I went through great effort to make an uninteresting PC helpful to the game. I used Ki blasts and speed to control the flow of combat. I inserted a backstory where my monk left a temple where he was guarding a powerful (likely evil) relic that he later left in the care of Moradin- receiving a handy blessing. The first of our own inserted communication with deities. I began fighting my own character to progress the story for my friends. Progress!
At the same time, I was playing World of Darkness. An intersectional game of Lovecraftian cosmic horror and Castlevania style violence and faction. I made my fisrt goof character. Trevor Belmont, but as an exhibitionist. Every 10 minutes of playtime, I would roll a die to decide whether or not I kept my clothes on. This brought a lot of fun to our games, but ultimately led to as much derailment as my character lent aid to the game. My second character better suited the world of World of Darkness. A veteran soldier, son of a veteran soldier. Pressed through the horrors of man's war, he was steeled to the horrors of demons and the night. His halberd cut through nightmares and evil like it did so many men. This character never saw a full campaign. Neither of them got resolved.
Enter the now: I have been waiting for half a year to resume roleplaying. A group started with my friends (neighbors) in 5th Edition. I wanted action and direction in my character now. Something different! A caster! A force of true good! I created my half-elf druid, and he was birthed into a world of conflict with corruption of nature! Devils and rot. Corruption perverting green lands and clear waters. A perfect protagonist! He purified forests, spoke to ents and beasts. Communed with the fey! His intuition led him out of prison, into the uncovering of a horrible cult, mindflayers, and led him to be possessed by a devil lord! He used his worldly resources, pulled upon all his wisdom, and cast a godlike power out of himself- and even kept part of its power with him. Yeah, my druid has a devil arm with evolving powers. It's pretty cool.
eNOUGH? No. I convinced my friend who started my interest in D&D over 5 years ago into hosting an online session. We play 3.5. My character is Ul'grot, the half-orc barbarian. Illiterate, violent, and conceived as horridly as most half-orcs are in the world of 3.5. But a true chaotic neutral, as a half-orc; whereas most pure orcs run evil and humans run the gamut. Ul'Grot is inspired by Gruumsh, the orc god of chaos and violent disruption- but not influenced by his will as so many orcs are. He seeks to blot out his own internal chaos and turmoil with violent exertion of will even though, as an nonintellectual, he is completely unaware of this part of himself. Ul'Grot simply is and does, and that is the beauty of him.
